I am shocked a company like yours - the size of yours - allowed this to occur.
  • Hannah

    Absolutely shameful.

However, on 15 May 2015, the ABC reported that Covino "has launched a new venture with a labour hire contractor exposed by the ABC's Four Corners program, despite a public statement claiming the business relationship had been severed."

Disgraceful & unprincipled conduct. I won't be shopping with Coles or Woolworths or Aldi again until these practises are wiped out.

I am writing to your suppliers - Coles, Woolworths and Aldi to express my disgust.

I am rather shocked to see Covino Farms mentioned on ABC 4 Corners.

This company, according to its own website, is "one of the largest producers of carrots, salads and broccoli in Australia." A recent investigative report by the ABC's Four Corners program revealed evidence that Covino, in its relationship with labour hire company Chompran Enterprises, engaged in the exploitation of migrant workers. Claims included underpayment, poor conditions and even abuse.

Huge producer of slave labor. Even after they were told about the labor contractor issues, Mr. Covino made an entirely new business with the old contractors so that they can continue their unfair labor practices.

I'm shocked & appalled at the practices & employment conditions- including wages for workers who pick & pack your fresh fruit & vegetable & process your chickens. The incredibly greedy pricing & lack of corporate responsibility & rhetoric employed by your company when really you are exploiting immigrant workers because they can not defend themselves. Whilst depriving Australians out of jobs you turn your back on the these conditions all in the name of profit. Portraying yourself as good corporate citizens is just a dirty disgusting lie.

    ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE SITUATION.

This business supplies major supermarket chains, as well as large fast food chains & other retailers. The allegations that they engaged in the exploitation of workers are now overshadowed by the claim that they took no action to remedy the problem. Indeed, it appears, based on reports, that they actively sought to perpetuate the same exploitation, regardless.

    ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE.

The company documents were lodged with ASIC on behalf of Mr Covino, Mr Huor and a third co-director named Soon Huat Ng.
  • Aaron

Company documents obtained by the ABC list Mr Huor as Mr Covino's co-director and equal shareholder.

Covino farms needs to be shutdown.
  • Angel
    Added 2013.11.29
Just 24 hours after making this statement, the co-owner of Covino Farms, Steven Covino, registered a new company named Horticultural Employment Services Pty Ltd.
  • Lauren
    Added 2013.10.09
Covino responded to the allegations on its website on 5 May 2015, stating that they had "terminated the last of its agreements with labour hire businesses that utilize migrant workers" and "implemented a new model where it now takes full responsibility for payment of workers directly, rather than through a labour hire provider. This provides absolute certainty that workers are paid in accordance with the National Employment Standards."
  • Bryan
    Added 2013.10.01
In a written response to the damning allegations, sent to the program four days before broadcast, Covino Farms formally stated: "Covino has recently terminated its agreement with Chompran. We will not tolerate any of our providers exploiting their workers and will terminate the contacts (sic) of any businesses that we find have fallen short of its contractual duties."
